The main decision: Thong Sala or Haad Rin
Most visitors should arrive at Thong Sala Pier, Koh Phangan’s main ferry and transport hub. It is the practical arrival for Thong Sala itself, Sri Thanu, Hin Kong, Chaloklum, Haad Yao and the northeast beaches. Taxis and shared pickup trucks are normally easiest to organise around the main pier.
Haad Rin Pier makes sense when your accommodation is actually in Haad Rin. It avoids a cross-island road transfer after the boat. It is a poor shortcut for most west-coast and northern stays: a convenient-looking sailing can create a longer and more expensive taxi journey after arrival.

Start with the route, not the brand
Lomprayah’s official 2026 timetable lists high-speed Gulf island connections through Koh Samui and Koh Phangan. Its fast services are useful when a short crossing and onward connection matter, but the correct Samui pier must still be confirmed on the selected ticket.
Haad Rin Queen connects the Haad Rin side of Koh Phangan with the Bangrak / Big Buddha side of Koh Samui. It is the location-led choice for a Haad Rin stay rather than the default route for the whole island.
Boonsiri announced a Lipa Noi–Koh Phangan service for 2026. It can be useful from western Samui, but a traveller staying near the airport or Chaweng should compare the long road trip to Lipa Noi with a closer departure pier.
Other brands or seasonal departures may appear in booking searches. Treat that as a live option for the selected date, not proof that the same route will operate throughout the year. Confirm the operator, vessel type, exact pier and check-in deadline before paying.
Choose the Samui pier by your starting point
From Koh Samui Airport
The airport is closest to the Bangrak and Big Buddha side of the island. A same-day ferry can work when the flight arrives early enough, but do not calculate from the scheduled landing time alone. Add baggage collection, the road transfer, the operator’s check-in buffer and a contingency for a delayed flight.

From Chaweng or Bophut
A Bangrak-side departure is normally the first location to compare. Ask the hotel to quote the transfer to the exact named pier, not merely “Bangrak.” If the ticket uses Maenam or Lipa Noi, calculate the additional drive before choosing a slightly cheaper or faster-looking sailing.
From Maenam or the north coast
Pralarn Pier can reduce the land journey when its timetable matches your date. Confirm whether the ticket includes hotel pickup and how wide the pickup zone is. “Koh Samui transfer included” may cover only selected hotels or a separate collection window.
From Lamai or the south of Samui
No common passenger pier is equally close to every southern property. Compare the complete hotel-to-pier journey instead of selecting by boat duration. An early departure may require a private transfer booked the day before because ordinary shared pickups can add too much uncertainty.
Why a 30-minute boat can take half a day
For a comfortable plan, allow roughly two to three hours from a Samui hotel to a Phangan hotel. Remote accommodation, shared hotel pickups, busy event dates and a longer post-ferry taxi can extend that. The short sea crossing is only one section of the trip.
- Reconfirm the departure pier. Save the map pin and operator name offline.
- Follow the stated check-in time. Arriving when the boat departs is not arriving on time.
- Keep valuables with you. Larger bags may be stacked or handled separately during boarding.
- Know the arrival pier. Send it to the Phangan hotel or driver before leaving Samui.
- Carry a flexible backup. Weather or operational changes can move or cancel a sailing.
Plan the Koh Phangan transfer before boarding
For a central Thong Sala stay, arriving at Thong Sala can remove the first paid cross-island ride entirely. For Sri Thanu, Chaloklum, Haad Yao and the northeast beaches, ask the hotel for a current pier-transfer quote and compare it with the shared vehicles waiting around the pier.
Agree on the destination and price before the vehicle leaves. Keep the hotel pin visible, because broad names such as “Sri Thanu,” “Thong Nai Pan” and even “Thong Sala” can cover properties well outside their most walkable centres. If arriving late, do not assume a shared vehicle will wait for your preferred route.

Connecting the ferry with a flight
Do not use a perfect-weather pier-to-airport estimate as the flight connection. For a Phangan-to-Samui-to-flight journey, work backwards from the airline’s check-in requirement and include the ferry check-in, sea crossing, baggage collection at the pier, road transfer and a substantial disruption buffer.
For an important international flight, staying on Koh Samui the previous night is the lowest-risk plan. The extra hotel night can cost less than a missed flight and removes the weather-sensitive ferry from the departure morning.
Full Moon and peak-date planning
Around major events, the practical problem is not only whether a boat runs. Seats, nearby rooms and onward taxis can all tighten at the same time. If you are attending an event in Haad Rin, match the arrival pier and accommodation deliberately. If you are not attending, check the calendar before booking a Haad Rin room or a same-day crossing.
Book earlier than usual for event periods and Thai holiday weekends, but keep the fare and cancellation rules visible. Never assume an unofficial event-date post is the final ferry timetable.

- Travel date: verify the schedule for the actual day, not a general route page.
- Operator: note who runs the sailing, especially when buying through an intermediary.
- Departure pier: save the full Samui pier name and map pin.
- Arrival pier: choose Thong Sala or Haad Rin based on the hotel.
- Check-in deadline: separate it from the departure time.
- Included transfer: confirm whether pickup is included and from which hotels.
- Luggage: check allowance and rules for oversized items.
- Accessibility: ask about steps, boarding assistance and luggage handling when needed.
- Changes: read cancellation, amendment and missed-departure rules.
- Contact: save the operator’s current telephone or messaging details offline.

Our recommendation
For most no-scooter trips, choose a sailing that arrives at Thong Sala and minimise the Samui road transfer at the same time. Choose Haad Rin Pier only when Haad Rin is genuinely the destination. Treat Lipa Noi as a useful western option, not an airport shortcut.
Allow two to three hours door to door, confirm both pier pins on the live ticket and avoid a tight same-day flight connection.
