First, make sure you are landing at USM
USM is Koh Samui Airport on the island. URT is Surat Thani Airport on the mainland and requires a road-and-ferry connection before you reach Samui. The two airports can appear in the same Bangkok-to-Samui search, but they produce completely different arrival days.
How the three main transfers compare
| Hotel area | Planning time | Easiest choice | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Central Chaweng | 10–20 min | Airport taxi or pre-booked car | “Chaweng” can also mean Chaweng Noi or a hillside property farther south. |
| Fisherman’s Village, Bophut | 15–25 min | Airport taxi, hotel car or pre-booked transfer | A Bophut address may be outside the compact Fisherman’s Village area. |
| Central Lamai | 30–45 min | Pre-booked car; shared van if the wait and stops are acceptable | Traffic on the east-coast road and accommodation beyond central Lamai. |
The ranges are conservative door-to-door planning estimates for normal traffic. Check the exact hotel pin: resort-area names cover much larger zones than their walkable centres.
Choose before landing
Four practical transfer options
1. Pre-booked private transfer
A driver meets your flight and takes your group directly to the accommodation. This is the easiest default for a late arrival, a family, several bags or a Lamai hotel. Before paying, confirm the included waiting time, flight-delay policy, vehicle size, child-seat availability and the exact meeting point.
2. Airport transport counter
Private cars and vans can be arranged in the arrivals area. This works well when you prefer to decide after landing. Show the hotel pin as well as its name and confirm the total price before leaving the counter. A fixed-zone quote should still identify whether your property is central, southern or inland.
3. Shared minivan
A shared van can reduce the per-person cost, especially for a solo traveller. The trade-off is time: the van may wait for enough passengers and then make several hotel stops. It is a reasonable daytime option for Chaweng or Lamai when you are not rushing to a ferry, tour or appointment.
4. Hotel pickup
Ask the accommodation for a current airport-transfer quote before booking elsewhere. It may cost more than a shared van, but the hotel already knows the entrance, hillside access and reception hours. For an isolated villa or a property with a difficult map pin, that certainty can be worth more than a small saving.

At Samui Airport: the low-stress arrival sequence
- Finish baggage collection first. Do not ask a driver to start waiting at the curb while a missing-bag report is still open.
- Use the operator’s stated meeting point. “Arrivals” can mean a counter, meeting area or named pickup zone rather than the first door you see.
- Match both hotel name and pin. Similar property names and broad area labels are common.
- Confirm what was prepaid. Check whether tolls, airport fees, child seats and additional stops are included.
- Save the contact offline. Keep the voucher and telephone or messaging details available without mobile data.
Do not make a ride-hailing app your only airport plan
App availability and permitted pickup points can change. A driver shown nearby does not guarantee collection at the arrivals curb. If you plan to use a ride-hailing app, check the current pickup instructions after landing and keep the airport counter as a fallback.
Avoid walking away from the airport with luggage simply to chase a lower app fare unless the route, weather and pickup point are clear. The saving can disappear quickly if the driver cancels or cannot find the meeting place.
Choose by group size, luggage and arrival time
Compare the total for the whole party, not the first per-person number shown. Also check whether oversized luggage, a surfboard, a wheelchair or several large suitcases changes the required vehicle.
Area-by-area arrival advice
Chaweng
Chaweng is the closest large visitor centre and normally the simplest airport transfer. The important detail is which Chaweng: the central beach-road area, Chaweng Noi farther south or an inland hillside property. Send the driver the accommodation pin rather than relying on the district name.
Fisherman’s Village and Bophut
Fisherman’s Village is a compact waterfront pocket inside the much broader Bophut area. A hotel inside or immediately beside the village is straightforward; a Bophut hillside villa is a different journey and may have a steep final approach. Confirm door access when travelling with mobility limits or heavy luggage.
Lamai
Lamai is farther down the east coast, so a direct vehicle is more valuable after a long flight. Shared transport can still make sense, but multiple stops add more time to an already longer transfer. Properties south of central Lamai or inland from the ring road need an exact quote and realistic journey estimate.

For the return transfer to USM
Arrange the pickup the day before and work backwards from your airline’s check-in guidance. Add the full drive, a traffic buffer and time to find the correct check-in area. Lamai needs a larger road buffer than central Chaweng; villas with steep or narrow access may need an earlier vehicle call.
Ask the hotel or driver to confirm the pickup time in writing. If your first transfer was reliable, saving the driver’s contact can be useful—but still reconfirm the fare, vehicle and flight date rather than assuming the return is automatic.
What to check before booking
- Airport code: USM, not mainland URT.
- Exact destination: hotel name, address and map pin.
- Vehicle: enough seats and luggage space for the whole group.
- Meeting point: counter, signboard or named pickup zone.
- Delay terms: flight monitoring and included waiting time.
- Total price: airport fee, extra stops, child seat and late-hour charges.
- Cancellation rule: especially for weather disruption or a changed flight.
Bottom line
Our recommendation
For central Chaweng or Fisherman’s Village in daylight, the airport counter is a simple fallback and a pre-booked car removes the remaining uncertainty. For Lamai, a family, substantial luggage or a late arrival, arrange a direct transfer before the flight.
Whichever method you choose, book to the exact hotel—not merely “Chaweng,” “Bophut” or “Lamai”—and keep the confirmation available offline.
